It’s easy to romanticize things that you only know from a distance. And as it turns out, we Westerners might have been slightly romanticizing the Korean beauty culture. Because while they certainly have a leg up on the technology of skincare (and it shows in their flawless faces), there’s a darker side to the culture that one Korean woman is trying to shed light on. Follow the link below to read her story that might change your view on Korean beauty standards.

All you have to do is take a look at some of Korea’s hottest mugs, and it should come as no surprise that they are far ahead of the US in the skincare game. Known for their clear, radiant skin, they’re clearly doing something very right, and it’s time to jump on this glowing bandwagon. KOREAN_BEAUTY_WB_BNR_01 In our skin’s defense, Korea’s skincare products aren’t just more technologically advanced than ours, but they’re more easily obtained without prescriptions or scary price tags. But even without these superior products, there are plenty of things Korean women do that make a difference. Korean woman focus on less makeup and more skincare, so their skincare routine is  a lengthy, rigorous process filled with multiple steps and more products than you’re used, but it’s not not-doable! Here are some of the biggest differences we noticed. The Double Cleanse This is exactly what it sounds like - washing your face twice before bed. After removing makeup with a cleansing tissue or makeup remover, an oil cleanser is massaged into the skin. This starts the cleansing process without stripping away moisture. This is followed by a gentle cream or foaming cleanser to remove every last trace of the day. Coined the ‘424’ cleansing technique, Korean actress Suzy Bae takes 10 minutes to complete the double cleanse: 4 minutes of oil, 2 minutes of cleansing, and 4 minutes of rinsing. Application Techniques Korean women place importance on not only the quality of the products used, but the way in which they apply them. Massaging or “slapping” products into the skin aids in absorption, and stimulates circulation. Some women extend this by giving themselves facial massages, or practicing facial exercises. Essence  Aside from the Japanese SK-II essence that has a cult following in the United States, essence is a fairly new term for most American women, but Korean’s consider this one of their most important skincare steps. Essences are similar in texture to our serums, and are used to lighten, brighten, and hydrate. Keep your eyes peeled, as American companies like L’Oreal are beginning to add essences to their product lines.

Sheet Masks Sheet masks are another staple in the Korean skincare routine, and are used at least twice a week. These masks come in a single, wet, papery sheet with cut outs for your nose, mouth, and eyes - like a Jason mask, but good for your skin. This allows the ingredients to soak in better than a simple cream mask, and is ultra-hydrating. Thanks to the craze, US sites like PeachandLily.com and SokoGlam.com have popped up to share some of these Korean goodies with us. So order yourselves some essence and sheet masks, and let’s give this glowing skin thing a go! Sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse.  Naturally, we get to test out products that are incredible finds from niche brands or notable brands that you know you're in for a treat when their products arrive; or even in other rare occurrences, sometimes yet to be released products, so we're the lucky few that get to test it before the rest of the world and then report back!  It can be quite invigorating and the other Editors and myself can sometimes (who are we kidding- most of the time) act like a pack of lionesses that just spotted a steak being tossed into our pen...  However, like every job out there, there are some times where you draw the short-straw and end up taking a product home that you're shaking in your boots about less it turn you orange, breaks you out, gives you a migraine, stains your skin and then the carpet, looks (and most likely is in fact) expired or just plain wastes your time. Fun Fact: All the outcomes listed are examples of actual negative experiences we've had while testing products.  The sacrifice/struggle IS real. When MISSHA's Time Revolution "The First Treatment Essence" came into our office you could feel the eyes shift and growling that had started to build into snarls.  We started prowling forward, ready to pounce on this elegant and luxurious frosted glass bottle of skincare that rivals (and defeats) the packaging of the notable SK-II essence bottles.  As we got closer, ready to claw each other's eyes out for this magical Korean skincare, we were finally close enough to read the packaging when we all saw the words "whitening benefits".  Suddenly a flurry of hair and perfume rushed past me in all different directions and to my horror I was the only one still looking at the product- thus the short stick was drawn and I was left to take home the product that could quite possibly turn my face geisha-white... Well thank the cosmetic-goddesses I did; this product was such a delightful surprise!  The essence is a lightweight, translucent liquid that is made up of 80% "Fissione" (aka Fermented Yeast Concentrate) which is instantly absorbed into your skin on contact.  Did fermented yeast sound odd to you, because it did to me as well?  While I'm no stranger to fermented yeast near my face, it usually is in the form of wine and goes in my mouth, not on my face...  Apparently, thanks to Google and Missha's website, Fissione is, "naturally fortified Vitamin B group [which] supports and increases the rate of metabolism and maintains healthy skin."  Who knew?! While the science behind it is fantastic, we don't really care unless it works, right?  This essence takes about 4-6 weeks of use to see an overall change to your skin tone, complexion and so on.  However within the first couple of weeks I noticed a brightening in my complexion, tightening of the elasticity in my skin as well as few (if any) breakouts.  The essence also provides your skin with intense hydration and tone balance.  The website, bottle and so forth also claim that the essence is known to reduce fine lines and provide anti-wrinkle protection.    While I can't say that these results were true for my testing period, this could be a case of needing to stick with the regiment for a whole 4-6 week timeframe.  The standout quality for me was the radiance the essence brought to my face (I suppose that Korean skincare refers to this as "whitening", so in the case of MISSHA's essence, don't be put off by that term!) as well as tightening the elasticity of my skin and reducing pore size.  SK-II's essence, which is highly regarded, has been known to sink into your pores and stay there (keeping them the same size- just clogged) and is over 3x the price for a smaller amount of product. This was such a delightful testing process, after much unnecessary trepidation in the beginning; however I always love a twist in the plot that ultimately has a happy ending!   *Editor's Note: No animals or Editors were harmed in the selection process of this review [post_title] => MISSHA's Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => misshas-time-revolution-the-first-treatment-essence [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2015-10-06 13:34:16 [post_modified_gmt] => 2015-10-06 20:34:16 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://www.healthbeautylife.com/?post_type=product&p=30571 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => product [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [10] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 30393 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2015-09-30 12:01:33 [post_date_gmt] => 2015-09-30 19:01:33 [post_content] =>

The Moistfull Super Collagen Cream is a newer addition to their collection filled with - no surprise here - collagen. 63% percent of hydrolyzed collagen to be exact. Collagen, as many beauties know, is a key ingredient in the body, responsible for promoting elasticity of the skin. It accounts for over 2/3 of the body's total protein. Basically it's your ticket to fighting father time. Hydrolyzed collagen enhances the effectiveness with an added layer of hydration. The peach-pearlescent packaging is simple and perhaps even elegant. It came with a little spatula, making grabbing enough product for a single use easy without the risk of contaminating the container with my fingers. The first thing that stood out was how different it felt in my palms as compared to some other night creams I've used. Super Collagens texture isn't heavy nor runny. It's almost mousse like with an extremely moist, cooling feel. The fragrance is crisp, understated and even a tad sweet. A peasized amount of product was enough to cover my face and décolleté. Super Collagen's formula absorbed quickly with only a minimal amount of blending and massaging. That's key because night creams tend to be thick and require added effort. In return my skin appeared more supple and dewy almost immediately. After a week of semi-regular use I've noticed a more bouncy overall appearance. Fortunately a little goes a long making the 2 oz. container a steal at $21.60. Great product and quietly possibly the new frontrunner in my skincare regimen. Iffy about snail slime? I was too. But if it’s a new beauty product that I haven’t tried yet, I’ll swallow my fears. So initially, when I hear “SNAIL BEE” I’m hesitant yet interested. The Korean made High Content mask from Benton uses a combination of snail slime filtrate with bee venom. CRAZY! So of course I had to try it! The benefit of bee venom is to stimulate the collagen in your skin thus preventing wrinkles. The snail slime filtrate shields the skin from environmental harms and promotes skin regeneration. It’s also packed with many other natural ingredients that have been proven to help improve the appearance of your skin. I applied this mask to my face and left it on for about 30 minutes. Prior to application, my face was a little flushed. After removing it with some warm water the redness had gone down, my skin tone was even and my skin felt hydrated. The only thing I didn’t like was taking the mask off felt sticky. It wasn’t very comfortable… The Snail Bee High Content Mask was “satisfactory” in my opinion. It didn’t do a whole lot but I might get better results if I use it longer and am consistent. We’ve been utterly amazed by the power of makeup lately. Like here, where one makeup artist turns himself into 6 of the Kardashian/Jenner women and another beauty blogger makes up half of her face and leaves the other natural, or here where a Korean woman removes her makeup on screen. But even after all of that, and knowing the mad skills of MUA Kandee Johnson, we’re still amazed to watch Johnson turn herself into a Barbie on camera. Follow the link below to see what we mean, and bookmark this if you were considering Barbie as a Halloween costume this year.

But it has come to our attention that some of you still haven’t tried it, and for that, we shame you! While essence is similar to a toner, they are not created equal. Toners tend to take away- they’re designed to be cleansing, sometimes even stripping the skin with alcohol. Essence, however, gives back to the skin. It hydrates with a humectant, almost instantly leaving skin a bit plumper. And we don’t know about you, but the dry, chilly winter-weather is already doing enough stripping of our skin, so ditching toners in favor of essence's hydration is pretty much a no-brainer. But wait!, there’s more! On top of just being moisturizing, essence works on a cellular level to optimize your skin’s natural cell turnover rate, targeting fine lines, wrinkles, and dull or uneven skin tones. So it’s tightening (without being drying), lightening, and brightening- shazam! And yes, we just said that. Its consistency is usually between that of a toner and a serum, and it's recommended that you press essence into your face, not drag it across, which tugs at your skin. Some women even put their essence into a spray bottle to avoid wasting any on a cotton pad, or potentially spilling it all over your bathroom sink when pouring it into your hand. The most popular essence in the US is SK-II. It's been around long before essences became popular in the states (actress Cate Blanchett is their spokesperson).  It comes with a hefty price tag, but not only does it have a dupe (Missha’s Time Revolution Essence), other US companies finally caught on to the magic of essence, and have saturated the market with choices. You’re our guest; you’re our friends… We want you to feel like you are coming into our home at a special dinner party.

One of Memphis’ newest fine-dining restaurants, The Acre , is everything you would expect: Highly coveted reservations, a seasonal menu, delicious food, and a professional staff. What you don’t expect is to forget you are in a restaurant. Tucked in a non-descript residential neighborhood on the east side of Memphis, this mid-century home turned restaurant uses the beautifully landscaped surroundings to its advantage, creating an inviting atmosphere that feels so much like home. From the bright yellow door that welcomes you in to the sun-drenched patio that overlooks the lush pristine acreage, you could easily mistake this experience for a Sunday night dinner party - that is until you get the food… Freshness and integrity of the ingredients that come through the kitchen are the focus at The Acre. The style of cuisine is not fusion (although you will find various influences from Asia to Latin America in each dish), nor is it traditional. Rather, Chef Wally Joe and his culinary team work together to integrate different ingredients and techniques from around the world using the freshest product possible for dishes that are truly unique yet feel homemade. The Acre’s expectations of high-quality ingredients can be found everywhere, from their house-made syrups and infusions behind the bar to the restaurant grown herbs and florals. Each dish is prepared with minimal manipulation to let the individual ingredients shine. Patrick was lucky enough to spend some time in the kitchen with Chef Andrew Adams as he prepared one of The Acre’s delectable, seasonal entrees.

Kimchee Glazed Snake River Sturgeon

Black Garlic-Salsify Puree, Chorizo, Artichokes, Lotus Root & Avocado Pea Puree
Ingredients • 1 lotus root segment • 6 cloves Korean black garlic • 2 salsify roots peeled and diced • 1 cup milk • 4 baby artichokes • 2 oz white wine • 2 shallots, minced • 1 cup of blanched english peas • 8 nasturtium leaves (substitute with arugula if necessary) • ¼ cup avocado oil • 2 oz Spanish dry chorizo • 2 cups pea tendrils • 4 6oz sturgeon fillets • 3 Tbs Momoya kimchee base or homemade kimchee pureed • Salt to taste • Olive oil for sautéing fish and artichokes
Preparation Turn oven to 350 degrees. Peel lotus root. Cut half of the root into ¼-inch disks and boil for about an hour, strain and reserve. Slice the other half of the lotus root into very thin wafers and fry until golden. (optional garnish) Simmer salsify in milk until tender for about 20 minutes. Strain the salsify and puree in a blender with black garlic. Add a small amount of milk as needed, but not all, to thin out puree. Season mixture with salt and hold warm. Peel artichokes down to the heart, place in acidulated water, and discard the green leaves. Sweat half of the shallots and add the white wine. Add the artichokes and cover with a mixture of half olive oil and half water or vegetable stock. Cook on low heat until tender, about 20-30 minutes. Strain and reserve. Sweat the remaining shallots over low heat in a sautee pan and mix with peas and nasturtium leaves in a blender. Puree with avocado oil until smooth. Season with salt and hold warm. Cut chorizo into small string-like strips (reserve a pinch for optional garnish). Sautee pea tendrils with olive oil in a pan over medium high heat. Add artichokes, boiled lotus root, and chorizo. Hold warm. Heat a large sauté pan or two small sauté pans over medium-high heat. Dry then season the sturgeon with salt. Add olive oil to the pans and then the fish. Sear until both sides are golden brown (about 1 minute per side). Remove fish from the pan and brush the kimchee base over the fish. Cook fish in the oven until cooked through. This will take about 3-5 minutes for a 2-inch thick fish. To plate, alternate dotting the salsify puree and pea puree on the plate. Place the pea tendril mix in the center of the plate and place the fish on top. Garnish with fried lotus root, additional nasturtium leaves, and chorizo.
