Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation
Have you ever swiped right on what you’re sure is going to be the man of your dreams, psyched yourself the heck out at how perfect the two of you seemed together on paper, started gathering supplies for your relationship scrapbook before you even met, then been horribly shocked and disappointed on the first date when you just didn’t click? That’s pretty much what I did with the Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation, excluding the scrapbook.
I first “swiped right” when I saw some of my favorite natural makeup beauty bloggers raving about this foundation. By far the most luxurious organic makeup line I’ve ever run across, I figured this was the perfect blend of my two loves — toxic-free makeup, and high style — and I just had to get my hands on him, er, it.
Certified Organic, no artificial ingredients, not tested on animals, gluten-free, jam-packed with good-for-your-skin ingredients like sweet almond, coconut, and jojoba seed oils, and all packaged in the most luxurious of packaging — how could Kjaer and I not get married and have organic babies?!
When it first arrived on my desk, the packaging was so perfect I nearly passed out. It comes in a luxe red box, which was pretty much the beauty maven equivalent of opening up an engagement ring box. Inside was the gorgeous, heavy-duty (And I mean heavy—this is definitely not good for travel.) silver compact that looked even more sleek and stunning than it did online. Bonus: it’s refillable, and the refills only cost $40, which is at least $10 cheaper than most high-quality foundations.
I also received their Foundation Brush (sold separately, $32)…AKA the tiniest “foundation” brush I’ve ever seen. It’s the size of the Bare Minerals concealer brush. Alas, wanting to do things right, I used it apply the foundation to a fresh face, and disappointment ensued.
No matter what I’ve tried, every application of the Kjaer Weis cream foundation has come out completely streaky and patchy, attaching to even tiniest flake of skin…flakes that weren’t visible before application. Their little brush took so long to apply to my entire face (Plus it was pokey, ouch.) that I gave up and tried my own foundation brush, and even my fingers! To help smooth things out, I tried exfoliating, applying a heavy moisturizer, Caudalie Divine Oil, sometimes both, but I was always left sorely disappointed.
While I do tend to have drier skin, I swear to the beauty gods it wasn’t particularly dry when trying Kjaer; and when I used other foundations on the days in-between my Kjaer attempts, they looked perfectly normal.
Like the Tinder guy you want to love despite not clicking, I just can’t give up on Kjaer Weis just yet. I’ll try a few more times, and will update you if anything changes. But as of right now, I can only possibly recommend this foundation to women with oily and/or supernaturally smooth skin. Should I someday meet another one of the Weis children and they’re the family member who’s meant for me— cream blush or mascara, perhaps— I’ll invite you all to the wedding.
