Staying in Shape - 5 Ways To Motivate Yourself This Spring

With swimsuit season right around the corner, many people are starting to feel a bit anxious about their figures. Those leftover holiday pounds have failed to go away on their own, so now it’s up to you to make them disappear. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to work up the motivation to stick with an effective fitness routine. If you find yourself in this situation, here are five tips that can help.

1. Exercise Buddy

There’s nothing like having an exercise partner to make you feel more motivated. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or co-worker, it’s always easier to stick to something when someone else is counting on you. You and your buddy can draw on one another’s determination, help discourage each other from making bad choices, and even serve as a sympathetic ear when the going gets tough.

2. Update Your Wardrobe

Most people wait until they’ve lost weight to update their wardrobe, but it may be more beneficial if you do it now. Go ahead and buy that new swimsuit you’ve been eyeing. It serves as a tangible goal that can help you build up the motivation to work harder.

3. Write Out Your Goals

One of the most important aspects of getting motivated is to have a clear understanding of your goals. Do you want to lose ten pounds in the next four weeks? Write that down. Is your ultimate aim to fit into a certain dress size by the time you go on vacation? You can include that, too. Having a detailed idea of what you want to achieve will help you understand what you need to do to get there. Whether it’s two pounds or two dress sizes, keep a thorough log of it in a journal or on your computer and refer to it when you feel like playing hooky from exercise.

4. Track Your Progress

As you work toward your established goals, make sure to keep a detailed report of your progress and results. It’s often much harder to know that the steady effort is paying off when you’re unable to see how far you’ve come.

5. Join a Gym

Joining a local gym, can be a great way to get motivated to work out longer, harder, and more often. It’s not that the equipment is better or that you’re in a more focused environment, although these things can help. Studies have shown that exercising in the presence of other people ignites an unconscious competitiveness in us that makes us want to out-perform them. Naturally, this leads to more dedicated and rigorous fitness habits.

Getting into shape in time for spring doesn’t have to be tedious or discouraging. When you incorporate some of these easy tips into your fitness regimen, you can enjoy enhanced motivation that leads to significant and lasting results.
