First Impressions

I think we’ve officially, inadvertently, stepped into being the expert review board for theBalm Cosmetics.  We’ve tested, reviewed and raved about so many of their products, so at the point it’s almost like beating a dead horse.  Put the stick down and walk away…  I think it is incredibly safe to assume that without fail their packaging will always slay.  So in order to avoid any more obnoxious repetition about how grand their packaging is I’ll just leave it at: unless further noted, theBalm will always win our hearts with their clever packaging and naming of products.  If their packaging is brought up in future it is because it utterly bombed; as if that will ever happen…

FratBoy blush and shadow, which is primarily used as a blush and when in dire need/ the color fits your look you can certainly substitute as a shadow, is a lovely matte pinky-peach shade.  The product is finely milled and therefore has a buttery consistency that makes all cosmetic lovers weak at the knees; nothing is better than a makeup product feeling like silk on your face, am I right?  mmMmm. The blush has a long wear time on your cheeks making it perfect for everyday makeup to school/work/adulating, ya know, life!  The intense pigmentation you can achieve with just one swipe of your blush brush is beyond this world- making this a product that will outlast its expiration date!  While it is very pigmented you can achieve a sheer look with a light hand and for a more intense flurry of color you would just apply more pressure.  I love that these blushes make it possible for either look just based on technique and pressure!  Many blushes have “buildable” pigmentation, meaning regardless of how much pressure you apply you will always receive the same amount of color and it can take you 3 times the application to achieve the pigmentation you’re looking to create.  theBalm solves that issue and gives you blushes that are capable of either look!

I do however have one issue with FratBoy (shocker, I know, didn’t see that twist coming did you?) and that would be that the color does not lend itself to all skin tones.  Now, usually this is not something to pick on a product/brand for, seeing as obviously not all colors look as flattering on all skin tones.  That is quite a tall order.  However, theBalm has proved itself quite capable of creating blushes that do just that!  So when you are, in our Beauty Editor’s concise opinion, one of the top makeup brands for all skin tones, ages and complexion types, well you’ve set the bar pretty high for yourselves and we hold you at a higher standard.  I would recommend FratBoy highly to those who are of fair to medium skin tones, seeing as this is a lovely shade that livens up your face by giving you a luminous flush of vitality!  However quite the opposite can be said for shade on darker skin tones.  The luminous pinky-peach turns into a chalky faded pink tone.    Not so luminous or gorgeous for that matter…  But, like all great brands, there’s bound to be one product or two that doesn’t instantaneously become a holy grail, but that doesn’t mean (for us light to medium skin tones, anyway) that it isn’t a keeper!

What We Love

  • Gorgeously matte pinky-peach shade
  • Packaging, as ever, has vintage, cleaver imagery that makes you want to fall back into the 50’s
  • Finely milled powder that makes for a buttery feel and removes any possibility of chalkiness
  • Blends nicely so it doesn’t look like a streak of peach on your cheek, however powder tends to rest on top of skin (see cons)
  • Intense pigmentation making the product a thrifty buy seeing as it will outlast its expiration date
  • Long lasting wear time- retouching is not a necessity (and thank the cosmetics goddesses because who has time for that nonsense)

Not So Much

  • Powder rests on top of skin rather than melting in for a natural looking flush; on lighter skin tones this did not tend to matter and had a lovely effect on the cheeks, however on darker skin tones this color looked chalky and was not flattering in the slightest.

Quickie

theBalm once more wows us with a lovely product that is as vibrantly gorgeous on the cheeks as it is sitting in its darling packaging. While theBalm has never led me astray, I can say that FratBoy gives a flush of luminous vitality to those with light to medium skin tones, while those with darker skin tones will find that the blush gives off a chalkier look that truly should be avoided at all costs. So, while this this product is almost all one could hope for in a blush, the color does not lend itself to every skin tone.
