What do you get when you roll Alabama charm and L.A. chic into one woman? Laura Lee. This southern bred, big city transplant is a self-taught makeup maven who is slaying the beauty vlogging world. She’s been picked to work with powerhouse brands from Covergirl to Smashbox, and it’s easy to see why: she’s talented, driven, and totally relatable (aside from her enviable bone structure and mermaid-like hair, of course).
Somehow, this busy beauty found time to take us behind the scenes. Continue reading below to find out her current lipstick obsession, favorite clothing store (It’s a bit of a shocker, in a good way.), and top health tip.
The most misunderstood part of my business: The concept that “being a beauty vlogger is an easy job.” Between filming, editing, props, meetings, events, and thinking of new ideas for my videos, I’ve never worked harder on anything in my life! I’m constantly busy trying to stay one step ahead of the game.
What’s new on the horizon: I have a few big opportunities coming up in the near future. One of which is shooting some videos with Smashbox at their newly created studios in LA. Keep an eye out for those videos coming soon! As of lately, I’ve been inspired by my fans and other Youtubers to start a separate daily life vlog channel on YouTube (Laura Lee Vlogs). It follows my weekly shenanigans from lazing around the house, to beauty event parties in the LA area.
What keeps me inspired: Magazines are always a main source of inspiration in my job. As a kid, my mom always bought me the cheap teenybopper magazines at the grocery store and I was obsessed with looking at the pictures. Today, I am more into Vouge, People, and a few others. The pictures/models/props/colors/makeup etc. are full of ideas and inspiration for me to always create fresh new content!
Biggest Challenges: Balancing my workload! I am a night owl, so I film during the day and I try to do most of my editing at night/early morning while my husband is sleeping. One thing I do enjoy about my work is that it’s not a typical 9-5. I control my work day and YouTube provides me with a platform for a flexible schedule. I use a day to day planner where I note video dates and ideas, which helps me to stay organized.
Daily Skin Care I have a pretty low maintenance morning routine and a strict nighttime regimen. I worked for a dermatologist for four years while getting into the beauty community, so I am grateful to have had the advantage of learning about the importance of skin care. I was very blessed with what I would like to think of as good skin. My morning routine consists of simply washing and moisturizing. My nighttime routine, on the other hand, is a little more extensive. It consists of washing, exfoliating, moisturizing, retinol, and eye cream!
I can’t live without my: Vaseline. I keep a tube of it everywhere I go. I’m allergic to Chapstick and I have extremely chapped lips, so Vaseline does the trick for me. If you coat your eye lashes with it at night it also nourishes them and help them to grow long. I also can’t live without my NYC black liquid liner. I learned how to create a winged liner with this stuff. I wear it every single day and it cost a measly $3 at your local drugstore, people!
Daily Makeup Routine I normally add a full face of make up during filming or before. I typically film around midday. After that, there is no better feeling than ripping off my false lashes! It’s an even better feeling than taking off your bra. Then nighttime comes and I start my nighttime routine. For long days (business meeting, beauty events, etc.), one product I know that’s always going to hold up is my Diorskin Nude foundation shade 030.
A new obsession of mine is: Ofra Liquid Lipstick in “Laguna Beach.” The shade is a mauve pink and I honestly think it looks good on any skin tone. Another obsession are the ColourPop eye shadows. ColourPop is a very original beauty brand and their eye shadows are very pigmented and have a squishy/creamy feel to them. The best part is they are $5 each!
Technique or product: what’s more important to looking flawless? I believe technique is the key to looking flawless. You can load up on as many facial primers and full coverage foundations as possible, but if not done the correct way, you may not end up with the result you were looking for. I often film drugstore looks and dupe videos that show girls how to look flawless while staying under budget. I didn’t go to cosmetology school to learn my make up skills. It was practice that taught me everything I know. Remember, practice makes perfect!
HAIR My favorite hair tool is my Nume 3-in-1 curling wand. I normally curl the bottom pieces of my hair with the bigger wand, and the top pieces with the smaller wand for effortless waves. But honestly, my favorite way to wear my hair is in a big mess on my head! (Editors Note: We totally agree.)
FASHION Describing my style would be chic with a touch of edge! My ideal outfit would be a pencil skirt, a graphic T-shirt tucked in, an added statement necklace, and heels are a must! I really like the way Kylie Jenner dresses. Sometimes she’s casual with jeans and a plaid shirt, but other times she’s over the top! My style represents how I am as a person– born and raised in Alabama, but always having an urge to move to the big city…edgy/chic. One of my favorite clothing stores is Urban Outfitters. You never know what you’re going to find there. I love shopping in their clearance racks. It’s a great feeling when finding a good buy at an affordable price.
HEALTH & FITNESS
I have to admit, my metabolism has been a bit of a help with my weight control. I have also always had strong portion control. I normally eat 6 small meals a day. Eating small meals helps boost the metabolism, plus I honestly can’t stand the feeling of being “stuffed.”
Health Tip: I drink at least 6 glasses of lemon water a day. I’m not crazy about drinking plain water, and lemons are my favorite, so mixing them helps increase my water in take. Plus lemon water has multiple health benefits, as lemons are packed with Vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, and fiber.
How do you relax and unwind? The thing that relaxes me the most is being at home, cozy with warm blankets, watching Netflix or a Redbox with my husband and cat. The simple life is a good life.
Trend that needs to be shelved: The trend I would loved to be shelved is the “man made body.” Don’t get me wrong, plastic surgery can be a beautiful thing. The huge trend I’ve seen explode is the large breast, tiny waistline, and Brazilian butt. If you were one of the rare ones born with this trending body shape, that’s fantastic. But I feel like people think they have to have plastic surgery on their bodies to “fit in” and feel beautiful and confident. This is not true. I would just like to see more people embrace their natural body, and be proud of what they have no matter what shape or size. I guess we would upset society pretty bad if we stood proud of what we have.
What makes you feel your best and most beautiful? Reading comments from people telling me that watching my videos have brightened their day, or that they come to my channel because they feel down and they need something to lift them up and make them smile. There is no better feeling in the world than knowing that my goofy, quirkiness has uplifted someone’s spirit. The truth is: people may not remember the things you do or say, but they will never forget the way you made them feel.
