Yep, it’s here… Thanksgiving is right around the corner. For those with food allergies like gluten however, any holiday or event can be a feat rather than a feast. So we decided to take a look at how those with Celiac Disease & gluten allergies can have a safe Thanksgiving by finding the right turkey at your local grocer or supermarket.
Finding a Gluten Free Turkey:
Many well known name brand’s carry turkeys free of wheat gluten. It is important to read the labels because certain hidden ingredients can be easily missed. If a label states it contains wheat or was processed in a facility with wheat than do not purchase. But remember, gray packets almost always contain gluten so it is best to purchase this item separately. Trader Joe’s carries a wonderful gluten free gravy for under $3.00! Gluten Free Turkey List 2012:
From the Butterball website (October 26th, 2011), “Only two of our retail products currently contain gluten: Butterball® Frozen Italian Style Meatballs and Butterball® Frozen Stuffed Turkey. Our gravy has been reformulated to eliminate gluten, but certain gravy packets may still contain gluten; it will be listed on the ingredient statement. Jennie-O® Prime Young Turkey: fresh or frozen (the gravy packet does contain gluten), Jennie-O Turkey Store® Oven Ready Turkey Breast (the gravy packet does contain gluten) and Jennie-O® Frozen Turkey Breast (the gravy packet does contain gluten) are excellent choices and are most often easy to find at any grocery store.
This specialty company states that all of their turkey and hams are gluten free, some customers have complained of gluten reactions. However according to Delicious Living.com a mother stated in one of their forums how she received a letter from HBH that confirmed “all glaze as well as our hame and turkey are gluten free. In fact, we require our vendor to test the glaze topping and it must test negative for gluten before it can be shipped to us.”
Safeway Brand (Von’s): Stated by GlutenFreeRecipeBox.com that the Brand’s Department for Safeway confirmed all turkeys gluten free on December 28th, 2011.
Foster Farms: According to the company’s FAQ section, “Our fresh natural chicken, turkey and individually frozen chicken are gluten-free. Our ground chicken and turkey with natural flavors contain only spice extractives and are also gluten-free.”
