Today is a new age in the world of golf.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice & Daria Moore are the first two women to join the Augusta National Golf Club, home of the regal Master’s tournament. One of the most famous golf courses in the world, it stands as a symbol of legends and rich history. However, it is also home to controversy, until today it had been for 79 years an all men’s club, and barely in 1990- invited its first black male member, businessman Ron Townsend, to join. According to the Wall Street Journal, “Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina investment banker Darla Moore were both invited and accepted membership, golf’s most prominent club said in a statement. The club’s next season opens in October.” Therefore, today stands as a symbol of change as policy has been adjusted and the two women who have accepted their invitation will be proud wearers of the renowned green jacket and more so, a symbol of unity within the golf community. Accoridng to Reuters, Moore stated, “”I am fortunate to have many friends who are members at Augusta National, so to be asked to join them as a member represents a very happy and important occasion in my life,” Moore said in a statement.” That being said, we think this is a momentous decision and we look forward to October to see a change in history.
